The location of the present railway station can be considered appropriate for passengers, but no one appreciates freight trains in the middle of the city. Rail tracks through the heart of the city are certainly creating daily traffic jams. Thirty-nine railway gates are situated within city limits. Freight trains are very long and move very slowly, causing closures of some of the busiest streets of the city for long periods throughout the day.

The mayor has to take an initiative in coordination and cooperation with the Bangladesh Railway to streamline the problems as follows:

  • The City Corporation should coordinate with the Railway Authority and other government agencies to construct an overhead Railway Track directly over the existing lines. In the meantime, over-bridges should be built over the busiest crossings.
  • Present railroads should be converted into an expressway.
  • Alternatively, new tracks may be built bypassing the city to link Kamalapur to Tongi.
  • Thirty-nine rail gates creating traffic congestion at present can thus be eliminated.
  • A study should be initiated to see whether the Tejgaon and Banani Rail stations have any relevance any more. If not needed, these two stations should be closed down. Land released thereby should be converted into parks and playgrounds. Cantonment and Airport stations should be enlarged.
  • All roadside shops, slums and other structures, authorized or unauthorized, should be moved to widen the road and create some parks and playgrounds.
  • The ICD should be shifted to somewhere in between Tongi and Gazipur instead of Kamalapur. This will reduce truck movements within the city area.
