Public Rest Rooms (Toilets)
It is unbelievable that for 9 million people in Dhaka city, there are only 30 public toilets. Even those few are not properly cleaned or maintained and are hardly usable due to deposits of filth and the bad smell inside. Initiatives must be taken immediately to build at least 1000 toilets in the city. Extra public toilets should be built only for women distributed over appropriate distances in various locations in the city. At least four hundred thousand citizens are forced to urinate on the streets every day standing in public.
- An initiative must be taken immediately to build sufficient toilets in each ward. Each toilet should have separate facilities for men and women.
- In addition, some extra public toilets should be built only for women and at junction points.
- Initiatives must be taken to make the provision of toilet facilities compulsory in public places such as fuel stations, terminals, railway stations, ferry ghats, restaurants and markets.
- Private contractors should be appointed to build, operate and maintain toilets under strict rules and regulations.
