working women dhaka

Over the years, there has been a great influx of women into the work force in Dhaka City. They have proved themselves to be equally capable, committed and important in all industries and trades. Despite their appraised achievements, there is still plenty that needs to be done to facilitate their lives.

A segment of the female population is becoming more and more financially independent. Their family background and education helps them break free from the conventional views of society. However, all women in general are still subject to harassment on the streets, shops and workplaces. For these reasons, the City Corporation needs to be more organized in enforcing the law and creating better public awareness.

A majority of the females are low wage earners and usually work in various garment factories. In this respect, they travel to and from work every day on foot. The City Corporation needs to ensure that the roads within the slums (where they reside) and the approach roads to the garment factories are all well maintained. As most women cannot afford proper shoes or sandals, proper roads are a must to make walking easier as well as to reduce the number of foot disease cases.

Besides fixing the walkways and footpath, there must be adequate lighting on the roads. The dark streets have become troublesome and dangerous for women to use on their way back from work or other family tasks. This results in harassment by the area ruffians. Apart from insecurity, women also face a problem due to the lack of public toilets. The public facilities that are available are not clean and extremely unhygeinic for any civilized woman to use. There must be separate bathrooms built that will be clean, accessible and only for females.

In addition, the Dhaka City Corporation must be able to provide immunization, nutrition and other forms of health education to the concerned women. It is important to advise and provide them with health care facilities. In these cases, the City Corporation needs to develop joint programs with city schools, clinics, active NGOs and various female organizations.

Finally, the City Corporation should implement a mirror solution of the Rural Maintenance project. Traditionally women have been more used and made committed to cleaning and maintaining houses and the environment. Thus they will be provided with another source of revenue, by using them as a helping hand in cleaning and restoring Dhaka City.
The City Corporation should provide special services for working mothers. The City Corporation should initiate the establishment of day care centres for children.
